The air was black and thick. Or so I thought to myself as I lay there. How can air be thick? This air is, though. I inhale its bitter viscosity and it coats my lungs in a film of tangible abhorrence.  It's been this way for so long that I can't remember there having been anything before it.  With no recollection of a time before, it's nearly impossible to imagine something to come after this.  But that's exactly what's happening. Even now forces are working and things out there, beyond this room, are changing.

Time is passing. I know it is because the change I feel is steadily growing. Though the palpable things around me remain stagnant, the change continues, it moves and shifts. A sound emerges. At first I can't comprehend the fact of sound. It's been so long since my ears have received an audible sound, a sound that wasn't a whisper of the past.  My head is aching now. The sound it is confusing and consuming. It hurts. It won't go away. It needs to stop, it needs to stop now, it hurts, it is pain, it is malign! I cover my ears but still the sound throbs on beyond the flesh and bone.  Louder and louder…It's coming nearer! Mercy on me malevolent sound! And it has stopped now. It heard my pleas for the return of the soothing silence.

No, something worse is coming. The sound, it is right outside! It's so loud! It's like thunder in my head! I curl into a small ball, my hands over my aching ears, crying the dry tears which accompany sadness and fear during dehydration.  There is a heavy metallic click then a scraping noise. Light pours in. It sears through the lids of my eyes and there is an explosion in my head. The pain is unbearable! Then all is silent and dark again. I am asleep? I am dead? No…not dead. There is something past the silence and dark…but right now I cannot reach it.

There are shapes moving in this dark. I see them. They come close and almost teasingly turn away just before reaching me. There are whispers here as well. They get louder and softer. The sounds and shapes pulse together as if in some ancient rhythmic dance. There is light coming now. It dances along with the sounds and shapes. I am content here in this limbo between wake and sleep. But my peace didn't last long, things are overwhelming. The shapes are more solid, the sounds clearer, the light engulfing. My eyes shoot open as I become aware that I am being touched. The light is instantly blinding. It burns so badly that I cry out and startle the thing which is holding me. It jumps and jostles me and I scream. Hurting my own ears I begin to cry my dry tears again as the darkness closes back in on me.
